If you walk through most electronics stores, you will notice the following types of DVD media, DVDR+, DVDR-, DVDRW+, DVDRW- and DVD RAM. This is enough to make your head spin. Here are the ins and outs of DVD Media.

Most DVD drives and DVD recorders will state specifically what kind of DVD media they will play right on the machine. The types of media listed above are media used to record data, movies and music. They are not used for Hollywood movies. All DVD players will playback Hollywood movies. However many other DVD players such as drives and recorders will also playback the above mentioned DVD media.

Many manufacturers have bought into a specific kind of standard either the DVD+ or the DVD-. Depending on the type of drive you own will determine the type of media you can use. DVDR stands for recordable. You can only record once on this media. DVDRW means rewritable. You can record and erase the media as many times as you would like. DVD RAM is a special type of media that resembles a cartridge rather than a disc. DVD RAM is not as common as DVDR and DVDRW.
